Figuring out how to upgrade your outdoor living space can be a difficult decision, but New Horizons – Go Retractable is here to help. Our motorized retractable screens and shades are the perfect addition to any residential or commercial building. Motorized retractable shades and screens both offer style, comfort, and pest control with one click of your remote control.
However, they also have their own distinct differences that may influence your decision based on your needs. Let’s break down the differences so you can decide which solution is best for you.

Motorized Retractable Screen: Inside View
What are the main differences between screens and shades?
The biggest difference between them is the amount of sun blockage they provide to your outdoor patio or lanai. Both screens and shades have some UV protection, with shades providing the most. Along with blocking the sun, shades also offer a higher level of privacy. On the other hand, screens are perfect for keeping your view intact and protecting against pesky bugs, while still letting the sun into your space.
Additionally, motorized retractable screens allow for maximum ventilation whereas motorized retractable shades are a tighter weave and don’t allow the air to pass through freely.

What are the benefits of each?
Motorized retractable screens are designed to provide insect protection, natural airflow, and unobstructed views of your beautiful surroundings. They are the most popular products we offer because of their versatility, ease of use, and seamless style.
Key Benefits of Motorized Retractable Screens:
- Insect Control
- Unobstructed Views
- Maximum Air Flow & Ventilation

Motorized Retractable Screen
Motorized retractable shades, on the other hand, are designed for maximum sun protection and privacy. Our shade screen mesh is made from denser materials that block heat, glare, and UV rays while still allowing you to enjoy your outdoor space.
Key benefits of Motorized Retractable Shades:
- Blocks the Sun
- Enhances Privacy
- Temperature Control

Installation and Customization
Despite the few differences between the screens and shades we offer; their installation process and customization are relatively similar.
There are 4 different installation options:
- Recessed – Into the frame of the home during construction or remodel
- Outside and above the opening
- Under the opening – like a window frame
- Inside and above the opening
Both our shades and screens are highly customizable to fit your needs. One of the customizations you can make is the type of screen mesh you want. Our motorized retractable screens are equipped with insect mesh, which is perfect for blocking the bugs but not your view and the incoming sun. The shades that we offer are still screen material but just a different style of mesh. We have solar mesh and privacy mesh.
There are also different levels of sun protection with our solar mesh: 80%, 90%, 95%, 99% sun blockage. If you’re looking for the ultimate amount of privacy for your space then you’ll want to consider the 100% privacy mesh, dim-out. The other customizable option that solar mesh provides is the multiple color options to fit your home’s aesthetic. You can view all of our screen mesh options in a virtual flipbook under the ‘retractable screen’ tab on our website.
